How to Choose the Right Location for Your Couple Portraits

Because where you stand shapes how you feel - and how you feel shapes everything

Most couples spend months choosing their venue. But when it comes to where we'll take your portraits, it's often an afterthought.

And yet, location is one of the most powerful creative decisions we can make together.

It sets the mood. It shapes the light. It tells the world something true about who you are.

Here's how I think about it, and how I guide my couples through it.

01 - Choose a Place That Feels Like You

The most beautiful location in the world means nothing if it doesn't resonate with you.

A sun-drenched garden. A quiet cobbled street. A wild open field at golden hour. The grounds of your venue, seen in a new way.

When a location feels familiar, even if you've never been there, something in your body relaxes. And that ease? It shows up in every single frame.

Ask yourself: where do we feel most like ourselves?

02 - Think About Light, Not Just Looks

A location can be visually stunning and still work against your photos if the light is harsh or flat.

I always consider the direction and quality of natural light when suggesting portrait spots, which is why I love planning golden hour portraits whenever we can. That soft, warm, directional light does something almost cinematic to every couple I photograph in it.

The right light doesn't just illuminate you. It reveals you.

03 - Simpler is Almost Always Better

You don't need a dramatic backdrop to create a dramatic image.

Some of my most emotionally alive portraits have been taken in the simplest of settings - by a windown, a doorway, a quiet corner of a garden, the shadow of a tree. When the connection between two people is real, the location becomes secondary.

What matters most is that you feel at ease, unhurried, and present with each other.

That's where the magic actually lives.

Location sets the scene. But you are always the story.
